Characters: Dee, Ryo, OC.
Rating: G
Setting: After Vol. 7.
Summary: Dee’s having a few problems with British roads.
Written Using: The tw100 prompt ‘Narrow’.
Disclaimer: I don’t own FAKE, or the characters. They belong to the wonderful Sanami Matoh.
A/N: This one’s a triple drabble.
Dee wasn’t used to such narrow, winding roads. City streets in America were much wider, and out of town he mostly used the multi-lane freeways; they provided the most direct route from place to place. Even when he left the freeways behind the smaller roads were usually two lanes, one in each direction. British roads were a different matter entirely.
By this point in their vacation, Dee was starting to appreciate the manoeuvrability of their small rental car. Back home, he and Ryo drove American classics, gas-guzzling hunks of steel built before they were born, but a car like that would’ve gotten stuck on the first tight turn they encountered here. Apparently the Brits were incapable of building straight roads.
Taking a blind corner, Dee slammed on the brakes and swore; a massive tractor blocked the road ahead, coming from the opposite direction. There was no way to get past it, or for it to get past them, and the lane wasn’t wide enough for even their small car to turn. “Now what do we do?”
“Reverse,” Ryo said, craning to look back over his shoulder. “We passed a gateway a few minutes ago, we should be able to pull in there and let the tractor pass.”
“This is insane! How’s anyone supposed to get anywhere around here? First it was a flock of sheep, now it’s a tractor… what next?” Dee put the car in reverse and started backing up, inching his way through the twists and turns.
“This is farming country, you’ve gotta expect the locals to use these roads. They belong here; we’re the intruders.”
Pulling into the gateway, they waited as the tractor trundled past, the driver giving them a cheery wave.
Ryo waved back. “Look on the bright side; at least the natives are friendly.”
