Jack hadn’t died, which was nothing less than a minor miracle considering the amount of blood soaked into his clothing and pooled on the ground around him. His wounds were healing, but not fast enough; this wasn’t a good situation to be in while he was still weak and vulnerable.

“Help me up,” he told Ianto, who was kneeling beside him, gun at the ready in case GrrrArrrgh that had just tried to disembowel him with its long talons came back. Yes, really, that’s what the creatures were called. Who said sentient aliens didn’t have a sense of humour? However morbid it might be...

Ianto spared his lover a brief, distracted glance. “You shouldn’t try to move yet, Jack. You’re nowhere near healed.”

“I’m aware of that, but this isn’t a defensible position. If it comes back for another try, we’re sitting ducks.”

As much as he hated to admit it, Ianto knew Jack was right.

“Fine.”

He looped one arm around Jack and hoisted him upright, only to have him sag abruptly, almost dragging them both to the ground again.

“Jack?”

“S’fine, just a dizzy spell. I’m okay.”

“Blood loss will do that. Just don’t pass out on me.”
