Ryo was already at his desk when Dee arrived at the precinct, which was no surprise. He had a pathological fear of being late for work, or so Dee teased him, and preferred to arrive early. Since they’d moved in together, they usually did the car share thing, but this morning Dee had been running errands for Mother, so Ryo had taken the bus.

Dee grinned across at his other half before calling out a cheery greeting to the only other person in the squad room.

“Mornin’, Drake.”

There was no reply; Drake was just sitting at his desk, not doing anything at all, with a sort of shellshocked expression on his face. Puzzled, Dee put the two takeaway coffees he’d brought with him down on his and Ryo’s desks before veering back across the room to confront his old friend.

“Drake? You okay there, dude?”

“Huh?” Drake blinked dazedly at Dee.

“I said, are you okay? You looked kinda out of it. Somethin’ wrong?”

“No, no, nothing’s wrong, I’m okay. No, I’m more than okay, I’m more okay than I’ve ever been in my life! It’s a lot to deal with. I thought I was getting good at being okay, but I’m not sure I’m ready to be this okay…” Drake trailed off.

“You’re not makin’ much sense, buddy.” Dee was really starting to get worried now. “Did ya hit your head or somethin’?”

“I don’t think so; I’m not sure I’d know.”

“Are you high?” Maybe it was a weird question to ask an on-duty detective, but Dee and Ryo had accidentally gotten high on a case once by breathing second-hand smoke, so it wasn’t beyond the realm of possibility.

“No. Yes. High on life!” Drake suddenly broke out in a huge smile. “JJ proposed!”

“Proposed? As in…”

“He asked me to marry him!” Drake looked like he could scarcely believe what he was saying. “Me!”

Ryo came to stand beside Dee, smiling at Drake. “Who else would he ask?” he teased. “You guys have been together three years, right?”

Drake nodded. “Three years last night. We went out to dinner. JJ got down on one knee and everything. I probably should’ve proposed to him, but…”

“What did ya say?” Dee perched on the edge of Drake’s desk.

“I said yes, of course!”

“Then I guess congratulations are in order. Really happy for ya, bud! Both of ya.”

“Thanks.” Drake’s eyes widened. “Oh God, this means we’ve got to plan a wedding! Venue, reception, guests, catering, flowers… JJ’s gonna want a lot of flowers. Suits, rings, a reception, music… I don’t know how to plan a wedding! There’s so much to remember.”

“Relax, dude! Doesn’t haveta be all that complicated. Why don’t you guys just elope like we did? Really cuts down on the plannin’.”

“Wait, what?” Drake stared at his colleagues. “You guys are married?”

“Yep!” Dee grinned. “Nearly eighteen months now. Vegas, weddin’ chapel… Somethin’ for ya to think about.”

Drake looked more shellshocked than ever.
