Summary: Jack and Ianto are preparing to leave earth again for another trip as earth’s ambassadors to other planets.

“I hate this part,” Ianto grumbled, trying not to pout as he carefully folded another T-shirt and packed it into his bag.

 
“What, packing? I thought you liked it, you’re so good at it.”

 
“That’s not what I meant, and you know it.” Ianto scowled across at his husband before reaching for another item to fold. “I hate leaving, saying goodbye to everyone, not knowing when, or even if, we’ll see them again.”
 

“That’s a bit fatalistic, isn’t it? We’ll only be gone a few months this trip.”

 
“We can’t know that for sure, things happen, we can’t plan for every eventuality.” Ianto shook out the shirt he was folding and started again.

 
“That doesn’t keep you from trying.” At Ianto’s annoyed huff, Jack held up his hands in surrender. “I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. You plan as comprehensively as you can, and it’s prevented a lot of problems over the years. Still, there’s no use fretting over things you can’t control.”
 

“I know that! Doesn’t mean I have to like it.”

 
“I hate leaving everyone too, it’s hard, but we have a job to do. Besides, if we never left, we wouldn’t get to come home again.”

Come to think of it, that's another reason Jack needs Ianto - to plan things and give him some structure in his life. But saying goodbye is never fun, even if it's only temporary.

Yes, Ianto keeps Jack organised, no matter what they're doing or where they go. Leaving their family and friends is never easy though, especially being away for months at a time. It's why they waited until the kids were grown before embarking on their ambassadorial career.
