“What the hell is that green stuff?” Owen peered at what Gwen was spreading on a piece of toast, a disgusted expression on his face. “Looks like something that’s gone off.”

“It’s laverbread. My mum cooked up a batch when she was visiting at the weekend, it’s… sort of like a spread made from boiled seaweed. Goes great on toast, and it’s got lots of iron in it.”

“Boiled seaweed? And you’re eating it? Willingly?” Owen recoiled. “I always knew you Welsh were peculiar, but that’s just…” He trailed off with a shudder.

“Don’t knock what you haven’t tried.”

“There’s no way in HELL I’m trying that. The Welsh are certifiable!”

“Are we now?” Ianto said, wandering over. “What’s Owen taking exception to this time?”

“Laverbread.” Gwen held up her little pot of green goo. “Want some? Owen thinks the Welsh are peculiar because we love it. I told him he doesn’t know what he’s missing.”

“Speak for yourself.” Ianto wrinkled his nose. “I can’t stand the stuff. Only time I ever eat it is when I visit my sister, just to be polite.”

“You almost never visit your sister,” Owen piped up.

Ianto nodded. “And now you know why.”
