Ianto paused just outside Meriel’s bedroom door, listening. It wasn’t exactly eavesdropping, not intentionally anyway, but when things were this quiet, it was wise to make sure his six-year-old daughter wasn’t doing anything that she shouldn’t. The door was ajar, she never closed it completely because of Nosy, and Ianto could hear her whispering to the Fluff.
“You can’t tell anyone, Nosy, especially not Taddy and Daddy, because it’s a secret, a special surprise for their anni-whatsit next month. You know, the day they got married. Auntie Gwen said she’d take me shopping so I could get them a present, but she never lets me choose, so I’m making a drawing of them getting married. I wasn’t there, but I’ve seen pictures. That’s Taddy, in a red shirt, and that’s Daddy in blue, see? They’re smiling ‘cause they’re happy.”
“Hum!” Nosy replied.
Ianto backed away silently, them approached the bedroom again, walking more loudly, and knocked on the door.
“Meriel? Nosy? Dinner in ten minutes!”
“Coming, Taddy!”
“Don’t forget to wash your hands and face before you come to the table.”
“I won’t!” Meriel lowered her voice again. “I’ll hide my drawing under the bed. Nobody will find it there.”
