Waves crashed against the rocks, sending up plumes of spray that the wind caught and scattered. The tide was coming in, and the tail end of a storm was making the water rough, but even though his face, hair and clothes were getting wet, Ryo didn’t care. He loved the sea best of all when it was wild like this, the brisk breeze, the battering waves, the salty tang on the air, were exhilarating in the same way that storms were. They made him feel so alive, and today he needed that.

“You okay?”

He glanced up and back, smiling slightly at seeing Dee picking his way carefully across the wet rocks to reach him.

“As okay as I can be.” Their latest case was hitting a bit too close to home: a middle-aged couple, having taken a second honeymoon because their youngest kid had finally gone off to college, had been ruthlessly gunned down on their way home from the airport. It brought back memories of his parents’ brutal murder, but at least this time the victims weren’t being treated like they’d deserved their fate.

Not that it made anything any easier for the couple’s two kids, especially finding out their parents had been collateral damage, the real target having been the taxi driver. If they’d taken the airport shuttle, or even just gotten into a different taxi, they’d still both be alive, instead of the father being DOA, and the mother still fighting for her life in the hospital.

“We can’t undo what happened.” Dee sat down beside Ryo on the smooth, water-worn rock.

“I know.” Ryo sighed, tilting his head back, the chilly wind whipping his hair about. “All we can do is make sure whoever was responsible goes to jail.”

That would have to be enough.

The End
