Summary: Dee and Ryo are enjoying a picnic in the park. What could possibly go wrong?

A/N: This one’s a double drabble.





The sun was warm, the sky was blue, and it seemed as though half the city had decided to descend on Central Park. Everywhere Dee looked, people were sunbathing, flying kites, throwing Frisbees, walking dogs… He didn’t care. All that mattered was getting to spend his day off with Ryo.


They’d found a spot by the lake, spread out their picnic blanket, and settled down for a leisurely lunch. Nearby, ducks bobbed about on the water, like a flotilla of feathery boats, occasionally upending themselves to dabble beneath the surface. Ryo pointed out the different breeds; he seemed to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of birds.


Picking up a ham sandwich, Dee took a big bite, washing it down with a mouthful of beer. Oh yeah, this was the life! No paperwork, no mean old badger yelling at him, just him and his baby, kicking back and relaxing on a sunny summer’s day. It didn’t get better than this.


He was about to take another bite of his sandwich when it was abruptly snatched from his hand, nearly taking his fingers too, and he found himself face-to-face with a gigantic swan.


“Ack! Maybe we should find someplace safer for our picnic!”

Swans are not to be trifled with! I used to volunteer as a warden at the local nature reserve, and the times I had to tell people NOT to approach the the wild swans with their little kids... Just because they look pretty doesn't mean they're friendly. They have the worst attitudes of any birds I've ever met.

Wow, and I thought it was just the swan parents who were territorial and overprotective of their babies. Good to know!

Oh, they're worse when there are babies, but they're territorial at the best of times. Geese and ducks are better natured most of the time, but they're still mainly wild birds. If in doubt, treat with caution, lol!

I love them all anyway.

Good thing they are water birds. Imagine if they were that territorial of the sky! O.O

Eeep! That would be nasty. Although, swans in flight are a very impressive sight. They're a bit ungainly on land but when they start flapping their wings they can come at you really hard and fast. You have to watch out for the wings as much as the beaks.

As you may have guessed, I'm very keen on birds of all kinds, I've been a birdwatcher since childhood, but I've learned they should be treated with caution. Having said that, the most vicious bird I've ever encountered was a stray pet lovebird that I captured in my garden. Within seconds in had me wishing I was wearing leather gloves, because it sank its beak into my hand and just kept chewing at me. I'm sure other birds could do far more damage, but than one left an indelible impression on me!

Oh my! Well we had better luck with a lovebird that we had rescued. Her owners put her cage on the balcony railing, not even secured to the ceiling or something! Some of the neighbours had warned them that that wasn't a good place for a bird. Then one day we heard a crash and her cage had fallen two floors to the ground. So we took her in. She was okay except for a broken wing. And really sweet considering the traumatic fall. The next day we took her to an animal hospital and shelter that has a small bird sanctuary on the premises.

Right now I've adopted a small dog, mixed breed. She hasn't been drinking water though she eats well. We've been giving her chicken stock and milk which she has. But today she didn't eat her breakfast. Today evening or tomorrow morning I'm taking her to the vet again. Hopefully it's nothing serious.

Awww, I hope your little dog will be okay. It's tough when anything is wrong with a pet.

Sounds like the lovebird you rescued was way more grateful than the one I found, which was a male. He had accidentally got out of the owner's house and been caught by a storm that had blown him 15 miles from his home. The owner was so grateful to get him back.

I've handled a lot of birds over the years, I used to breed and show Zebra Finches and Bengalese, and we always had budgies or later cockatiels. I even hand reared a baby coal tit until a sanctuary could take him in, but the lovebird was the most vicious, followed by our cockatiels every time I had to clip their beaks or claws. They always made their displeasure known so I usually wore gloves when handling them. I just didn't have time with the lovebird - saw it, grabbed it, regretted it instantly but couldn't let go until mum found a cage for me to put it in!

Also did the same when I found a stray ferret in the garden, but that was much friendlier, although very smelly. My rabbit wasn't at all happy to have a ferret in the cage below his.
