Bute Park, and most especially the area around the children’s play park with its swings, slide, roundabout, climbing frame, seesaw, and sandpit, was in chaos, parents running around and screaming, desperately trying to protect their children from the creatures that had suddenly appeared out of nowhere.

Torchwood, alerted by Tosh’s Rift monitor, were on the scene within minutes, Jack skidding the SUV to a halt in a spray of gravel and five people piling out, weapons drawn, almost before it came to a stop. As adults fled, dragging or carrying their protesting children, the team strode purposefully in the opposite direction, ready to deal with the terrifying threat.

Jack was in the lead, ready to do battle with the invaders, but he stopped dead when he saw the cause of the commotion.

Somewhere around twenty pink and lavender puffballs were scampering about, some scrambling up the steps of the slide and gliding down, trilling enthusiastically, others trying to get the roundabout to spin, a few on the swings, rocking back and forth, even a couple digging in the sandpit.

“Don’t look particularly dangerous, do they?” Ianto said at his side.

“They’re not. They’re called Vooshna, they live to have fun.”

Do the Vooshna allow humans to play with them? I find myself wanting to make the roundabout spin faster for them. Are they too big to juggle with? (Not that I can juggle, although for some unknown reason I was thinking about learning to juggle when I woke up this morning.)
