Feelings were a nuisance, JJ decided, sitting at the bar, and sipping on his drink. He’d come in here to drown his sorrows, but his heart wasn’t in it, so he was still on his first cocktail. He idly twirled the little umbrella between finger and thumb, wishing he was on a tropical island instead of still in New York. Nursing a broken heart would be a lot easier somewhere hot and sunny. It was much harder to be miserable when the sun was shining in a bright blue sky, but outside the bar, rain was falling steadily from the leaden grey clouds. He supposed that suited his mood, but it wasn’t helpful.
It was hard to put a finger on exactly how, but Dee and Ryo had been behaving differently over the last few weeks. Most people wouldn’t have noticed, but because of his fixation with Dee, JJ had been painfully aware of the change almost from the start. They were both more relaxed around each other, Dee seemed happier, and Ryo no longer had that vaguely worried air about him.
JJ wished he could hate Ryo, but he couldn’t. In a weird way, he was happy for them both; Dee had been pining over his partner for so long, and… well, at least two people had found happiness, even if JJ himself remained alone and loveless. He’d invested so much in his hopes for an eventual relationship with Dee. Now he was processing that it would never happen, he felt sort of hollow, deflated, adrift.
It was the whole ‘feelings’ thing, of course, because he still had them. Feelings couldn’t simply be turned on and off at will. He still loved Dee as much as he always had, and it hurt to know the man he’d considered the love of his life would never be his, that all his hopes and dreams had come to nothing. He couldn’t even mourn a lost love, because how could he lose something he’d never had in the first place?
He took another sip of his cocktail and sighed. Tomorrow he’d be back at the precinct, and so would Dee and Ryo, being all discreetly happy and couple-y. JJ would have to ignore them as best he could while his heart was shattering, act normal, so nobody would know how badly he was hurting. He didn’t know if he could do that.
