Dee smiled to himself, wishing every evening could be like this. If he had his way, he’d be here after work every day of the week, and on his days off, but he didn’t want to push his luck and wear out his welcome, so, while he wasn’t above dropping hints, some of them the size of anvils, he mostly waited to be invited. Bikky was less likely to complain that way.

Dinner had been great, but then it always was chez Ryo; his partner was a terrific cook, and lovingly prepared homecooked meals beat frozen TV dinners or takeout any day of the week. But now, with their post-dinner coffee finished, and the TV tuned to an old but inoffensive movie, less for watching and more for ambience and background noise, Dee was perfectly content to relax with Ryo on the sofa, both of them tired from a busy day at work.

It was good to be off his feet, and Dee was sure Ryo felt the same. Canvassing for witnesses was always exhausting, not to mention demoralising, because people preferred not to get involved. Actually finding someone willing to talk to the police was a miracle, and that didn’t guarantee that they’d seen anything, or if they had, that they’d be willing to testify, assuming the case ever went to court. However you looked at it, they’d earned a rest, and Dee was intent on making sure they both got one.

Bikky had finished his homework by now, and was half watching the movie, while giving Dee death glares every few minutes, just because he was sitting with one arm around Ryo. It made Dee want to smirk smugly at the kid, but he resisted the temptation because, from the soft, snuffling sounds Ryo was making, it appeared that he’d dozed off with his head on Dee’s shoulder. That was hardly surprising after the day they’d had; Dee was feeling kinda sleepy himself, well fed and content, the man he loved resting warm against his side.

The only dark cloud on the horizon was that the dishes from dinner were still waiting to be done, and Ryo would be less than happy when he woke up from his unscheduled nap and realised he still had that chore waiting for him. Dee wouldn’t be happy either, because he knew what Ryo was like, and there was no way his baby would go to bed and leave the dishes unwashed overnight.

Under other circumstances, Dee would have gladly gotten up and done them himself right now, to save his lover the trouble, and to ensure that he and Ryo could go to bed whenever they felt like it, but he couldn’t. If he moved so much as an inch, he’d wake Ryo, and that was something he really didn’t want to do. A nap now would mean he’d be refreshed and less tired later, which could mean that Dee would get lucky… There was only one solution he could think of.

“Hey, kid,” he murmured, keeping his voice low so that he wouldn’t disturb Ryo.

“What?” Bikky glared suspiciously at his nemesis.

“I’ll give ya twenty bucks if you’ll wash the dishes to save Ryo havin’ to do ‘em later.”

Eyes narrowed, Bikky gave that some careful thought, obviously not wanting to seem too eager. Then, when the silence had stretched between them for at least a couple of minutes, he finally nodded.

“Deal. Payment up front though.”

“My wallet’s in my jacket. I know how much is in there, so don’t go helpin’ yourself to more than we agreed, ‘kay?”

“As if I’d steal!” Bikky said with a sniff. Ryo had broken him of that tendency years ago. He fetched two tens from Dee’s wallet, showed them to Dee, then stuffed them in his pocket before heading for the kitchen.

“You do know that’s bribery, don’t you?” Ryo murmured against Dee’s shoulder.

“Nah, it’s fair payment for services rendered.” Dee looked down at his lover: Ryo’s eyes were still closed. “Thought you were asleep.”

“Mm, mostly.” Ryo snuggled closer, smiling. “I could’a gotten Biks to do the dishes for ten.”

The End

Well, lets just hope the additional ten bucks makes him more tolerable to Bikky.
