Honesty was important in a committed relationship, so were mutual trust and respect. Shared values helped, and physical attraction was a plus, but one thing people seemed to overlook as being essential to a healthy relationship was laughter.

Didn’t matter whether you were laughing at yourself, each other, or sharing amusement over something, if you couldn’t laugh, there was something seriously wrong. Okay, some days there wasn’t much to laugh at, or even smile about; detectives working serious crimes saw a lot of terrible things. But getting mired down in the awfulness of their jobs wasn’t healthy, and some days laughter really was the best medicine.

Right now, Dee and Ryo were both laughing so hard they were having to hold each other up. It shouldn’t have been so funny, probably, but the deceased, a member of a gang from his tattoos and the way he was dressed, wasn’t likely to be offended.

“Is it just me, or are his pants movin’?” Dee had asked.

“It’s not just you.”

Carefully, Dee had prodded the body, and a rat had shot out of the corpse’s pants leg, smacked into the wall, then fled.

They’d looked at each other and cracked up.

The End
