A/N: Double drabble.




It had been one of Ryo’s favorite spots in Central Park, the tall old tree with its spreading branches, providing shade in the heat of summer, shelter from the rain, and a dramatic leafless silhouette against the winter sky. It would never be any of those things again.


The storm had raged above New York for three days, lashing the city with gale force winds, and had done a lot of damage. Ryo knew he should be feeling worse for the people who had lost their homes, and in a couple of cases, their lives, but instead he stood there in the park, devastated over the loss of a tree. It wasn’t even the only casualty; nearly a dozen had been felled by the wind, but this one had been among the oldest in the park; its loss was unexpected and somehow struck him as tragic.


“What will happen to it now?” he asked one of the workmen tasked with cutting it up.


“The smaller branches will be sold as firewood and the bigger pieces as lumber. Some of the local artists and furniture makers are already bidding on it.”


There was some consolation in knowing it wouldn’t be wasted.
