A/N: Double drabble.
Gwen sat at her workstation, going through the files one at a time, taking in the details, heart growing heavier with each one. She’d been stupid to think she could fix any of this; the one attempt she’d made had stolen a decent woman’s hope, left her shattered, left a damaged man feeling even more broken and lost than he had before.
She’d thought seeing him mam would help Jonah, but it had only served to remind him of the normal life he could no longer have. In his mother’s eyes he’d seen reflected the disfigured monster he’d become instead of the boy he’d once been, making him realise he could never go home. She’d held out hope to him then snatched it away, and that was unforgivably cruel.
A sudden pain brought her up short; without even realising it she’d been biting her nails, a habit she thought she’d broken years ago. Now she’d gnawed her thumbnail down so far she’d drawn blood.
Not all habits were bad, but most were, like the one where she always thought she was right, no matter what anyone else said. Maybe it was time she started listening when Jack told her ‘no’.
