Dee felt hollow, empty inside as though someone had reached into him and ripped out all his organs, leaving behind nothing but an echoing cavern. It was a weird sensation because surely that kind of emptiness should be devoid of sensation, but it wasn’t. It hurt, a grinding ache, a phantom pain, his body still feeling something that was already gone.
When Arnon was killed Dee had been numb inside. Every time he’d turned around, he’d expected to see his friend there, grinning, laughing at the joke he’d pulled on them… “Had you going there, didn’t I?” There’d been a sense of unreality, like it had all just been a bad dream. It couldn’t be real because he and Arnon were the same age and teenagers were indestructible. The thought that one of his best friends could die so easily made no sense. That had been bad enough, but this was worse.
Jess was gone, one of the cornerstones of Dee’s life, and Dee had been right there when he’d died, seeing the light fade out of his eyes… Until that moment he hadn’t realised how much he’d depended on the man; he’d just always been there. Some of Dee’s earliest memories revolved around Jess: ice-cream on a hot summer’s afternoon, playing catch on the street outside the orphanage, being lifted onto the man’s shoulders to watch a parade…
There should’ve been more. Jess had promised to teach him to drive, had said they’d do something special for Dee’s sixteenth birthday, just a few months away, but none of that would happen now because Jess was gone and never coming back.
“I never even thanked him for all the things he did. I owe him so much.”
He’d always have a hollow space inside him where Jess used to be.
