The road was wide, a smooth expanse of a pale lavender substance that resembled marble but was obviously manufactured. It stretched out in both directions to the horizon, absolutely straight and flat, and completely deserted.

 
“Where is everyone?” Amy asked. “I thought you said this planet was inhabited.” Aside from the road, the only things visible were fields of ripening grain.

 
“The cities are underground. I’m sure someone will be along shortly.”
 

Moments later, a cloud of dust approached, and a multi-legged creature stopped in front of them.

 
“Need a lift? Hop on then!”

 
“Thankyou.”

 
“All part o’ the service.”
