A/N: Triple drabble.
Dee was still relatively new to the joys of gardening, but despite it often taking near backbreaking effort to dig and turn the soil, not to mention all the bending to pick out weeds and roots, he found he enjoyed it. There was something oddly relaxing about turning a patch of bare earth into a flourishing flower or vegetable bed, and then maintaining it by watering, pulling weeds, deadheading plants, picking fresh veggies…
He and Ryo were working on what was to be one of the orphanage’s vegetable plots, once it was cleared of weeds and the remnants of the plants that had grown there the previous year. Ryo had said rotating the crops was important because different plants took different nutrients from the soil, or something like that, so the same vegetables shouldn’t be grown in the same spot year after year. They’d probably be digging in fertiliser of some kind anyway, so Dee wasn’t sure why it mattered, but his lover knew way more about gardening, so Dee wasn’t about to argue with him. Speaking of Ryo…
A disgusted cry came from the other end of the area they were digging, and Dee straightened up.
“You okay, babe?”
“Fine. I just knelt on a slug.” Ryo used his hand trowel to scrape the remains off the knee of his jeans, then flicked the squashed slug away into the undergrowth. He frowned at the stain left behind by the slug’s slimy secretions. “It’s going to be nearly impossible to get that out. Slug slime isn’t just sticky, it’s waterproof.”
Dee bit his lip, trying not to laugh. “Guess you should’a watched where you were kneelin’. Unless ya meant to commit slugicide.” He couldn’t repress a grin.
Ryo glared at him. “It’s not funny!”
“It is from where I’m standin’.”
