Everyone knew being a cop could be dangerous; didn’t matter if you were a plainclothes detective or still a uniformed patrolman. Even desk sergeants weren’t totally immune to the dangers inherent in the job.
Ryo had been shot, stabbed, hit over the head with a variety of objects, had broken bones, gotten strains and sprains, and cut himself on jagged obstacles while chasing suspects. He accepted all of that as simply being among the downsides of his chosen profession.
What annoyed him were all the other times he injured himself that had nothing whatsoever to do with work. It didn’t seem fair that he should put his life on the line on the job every day only to come home and fall foul of something he wouldn’t normally consider dangerous.
‘Am I the only person to injure themselves in bed, alone?’ he wondered. ‘Maybe I’m just a klutz.’
He studied himself in the mirror, his right eye noticeably swollen and bruised. How was he going to explain that? If he told the truth, everyone would laugh, but how could he lie? That would mean blaming someone else for something that had been entirely his own fault. With a resigned sigh, he finished getting ready for work; he’d just have to suck it up and accept that he was an idiot.
“What the hell happened to you?” Dee stared at his partner’s blackening eye in dismay.
“I’m fine, it was just a stupid accident,” Ryo muttered, sitting down at his desk.
“You sure? ‘Cause I’m perfectly willin’ to go beat up whoever did that to ya.”
“That would be pointless; I did it to myself.”
“How’d ya manage that, genius?”
“I woke up cold, and when I tried to pull the covers higher, my hand slipped. Punched myself in the eye.”
The End
