Drake spent his entire adult life being the archetypal loser in love, probably lost more girlfriends than most people have had hot dinners. He doesn’t know exactly how many women dumped him, he stopped counting after the twelfth because it was getting downright demoralising, but whatever the total might be, it’s way too many.

He's aware that over the past few years his failures in the romance department have been a source of amusement for some of his colleagues, and he doesn’t entirely blame them. He might have found the situation laughable himself, if it weren’t so pitiful, but all that’s in the past now, and has been for several months.

It’s sort of weird, in a good way, but hard to get his head around. It feels like practically overnight he’s gone from being the two-seven’s Mister Lonely, to one of the luckiest guys in the city.

Valentine’s Day this year was the best he’s ever experienced, and more than a month later he still feels like he’s walking on air. Being a winner in the game of love is a heady experience, one he could definitely get used to.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been this happy in my life.” He can’t stop smiling.

“It suits you,” JJ tells him, smiling back. “You should always be this happy.”

“I don’t know, it might give people the wrong idea at crime scenes.”

“Mm, that’s true. Best to assume an appropriately serious expression around victims and their families.”

“I’m not sure I remember how. Whenever I’m near you the world seems brighter. I don’t want to hide how you make me feel.”

“You make me happy too, Drakey.”

“I’m glad. I used to think I’d always be alone, but all I needed was to find the right person to love.”

The End
