Fluffs were not cowards. On their own planet, among their own kind, and surrounded by all the familiar plants, birds, insects, and animals they shared their world with, Fluffs were bold, adventurous, fearless. But then, perhaps that was simply because in their natural habitat, they had nothing to fear.
This enormous cave, deep beneath the ground, was not a Fluff’s natural habitat. It was full of strange sounds and smells, unfamiliar, shadowy shapes looming in the darkness… Nosy had been nervous enough out in the wilderness, but at least there the woolly creatures had provided it with company, and it could still see the stars overhead.
That wasn’t possible here, the stars weren’t visible from underground, and there were no woolly creatures to hide among, only the big bird, roosting high overhead. Even Nosy’s new friends had gone somewhere else, another part of the cave, leaving Nosy alone, and afraid.
Its new friends weren’t being cruel, leaving it here alone, they’d made it comfy, but the shadows seemed to flicker and move. Although the Fluff couldn’t sense any other living creatures nearby, that wasn’t as soothing as it should have been. Nosy didn’t like being so completely alone; back on its own world it never had been, because there were always other Fluffs nearby, their presence easily sensed…
Nervously, gripping the cover it had been given, Nosy slinked its way through the cave, seeking its friends, finding them in a smaller cave below the big one. Jack and Ianto were asleep, but that was alright, it meant there was nothing to be afraid of; Nosy knew it would be safe here.
Nevertheless, the Fluff decided closer was better, and slinked its way beneath the platform its friends were sleeping on. This was a much better place to spend the night.
