Cops were never completely off-duty, no matter where they were or what they were doing. Ryo supposed that could be considered one of the job’s downsides, but he didn’t really mind, most of the time. After all, it was good to know that if he saw a crime being committed, he could do something about it. More than once, he’d dealt with shoplifters while doing the grocery shopping, or pickpockets while watching a parade. He and Dee had broken up barfights before they could turn ugly, even done what they could to help following car crashes.

This was a little different, but still not something two off-duty detectives could ignore. Not really something ANYONE could ignore, come to that.

“They don’t pay us enough for this!” Dee grumbled, tackling the man who was very much disturbing the peace on a sunny afternoon in Central Park. “Who the fuck streaks through the park on a public holiday?”

“Or any other day,” Ryo added.

“Hey, you can’t do this!” their captive protested.

“Sure we can.” Dee cuffed the guy’s hands behind his back. “It’s our job.”

“It’s not illegal to go for a run!”

“It is when you’re naked. Public nudity is against the law.”

“But I’m not naked, I’m wearin’ sneakers!”

“Your feet aren’t the problem,” Ryo said, wondering what he could use to cover the offending parts of the streaker’s anatomy, since neither he nor Dee was wearing a shirt or a jacket. “It’s the rest of you that is.”

“Here,” a voice said at his shoulder. “Use this.” A middle-aged woman was standing nearby, holding a picnic blanket.

“Thank you.” Ryo accepted it with a smile. “You can reclaim your property at the Central Park precinct tomorrow.”

“I think I’ll pass. About time I got a new one anyway.”

“Can’t say I blame you.”

As Dee hauled their prisoner to his sneaker-clad feet, Ryo blocked the public’s view, quickly wrapping the picnic blanket around the naked man.

“Hope you’re at least wearin’ sunscreen,” Dee commented, propelling the streaker ahead of him. “Gonna be real sore later if you’re not.”
