Ryo was reeling, not so much from the unexpectedness of Commissioner Rose kissing him, in public, full on the mouth… That had been bad enough and probably constituted sexual assault, if he wanted to take that route, which seemed inadvisable since Rose was his superior, but… What had really shaken him to his core was his own response.
He wasn’t a violent man. He was a police officer, and trained to respond to violence in whatever way would prove most effective, but he’d never been the kind to just… lash out at people, regardless of provocation. He was a martial arts practitioner, a karate black belt, he understood the importance of self-control, and therefore typically used no more force than was strictly necessary on any given occasion, and yet he hadn’t thought at all, he’d simply reacted.
And he’d punched the commissioner of police in the mouth, with all his strength. If that wasn’t an overreaction, he didn’t know what was. He’d knocked Rose, who was several inches taller, and proportionately heavier, right off his feet, and yes, he’d almost broken his hand in the process, but what damage might have been done to his career if Berkeley had decided to press charges against him for striking a superior officer? It didn’t bear thinking about.
All that, over one kiss. True, it had been unwelcome, because he wasn’t interested in Berkeley that way, saw the man only as a colleague, and perhaps a friend. But still, he shouldn’t have handled the situation so badly. He should have pushed Berkeley away, told him he wasn’t interested, asked him not to do it again… It was just that when Rose’s lips had met his, he’d felt a surge of disgust, and he’d panicked.
The weird thing was, he never felt that way when Dee kissed him. Not that he welcomed Dee’s kisses any more than he did Rose’s, but Dee never made him feel the need to resort to violence.
Ryo’s hands were still shaking, his knuckles bruised, and he was shocked at himself. How could he ever face the commissioner again?
The End
