It's fully online this year, but it's still on. I've already been on one panel, dealing with acespec identities and representation, and I've got another Sunday. I'll be attending at least a couple more between now and then. But seriously, I *need* this four-day weekend. I took today off deliberately, given it's WisCon weekend, and con or not, that was absolutely the right call. Good gosh.

I intend to be up and out early tomorrow, the better to get to the farmers market and back again before the 10 AM panels happen. Wish me luck? :P

[personal profile] jesse_the_k, are you in on WisCon this year?

Not much to write this week. I'm starting up again on my comic Promised Memories again. Now I'm on chapter 19 finally! Then chapter 20 and I'll be done with part 2 of my story! I'm thinking of making it a total of 5 parts? Maybe up to 100 chapters... that feels like a-lot but already it's been 18 chapters which is a good accomplishment. It feels nice to work on it again.

The weather here has been pretty crummy. Wet, stormy, windy and cold. Climate change is a thing! I've gotten a bit of gardening done but not much. I need to learn what this one ground cover plant is that I have on my hill. I got it years ago from a patient I took care of when I did home health care. It's been growing nicely along with my lilac bushes I'm planting and hoping to have spread-out so I don't have to mow. Earlier this week I got my mower stuck several times on my hill and it was annoying. So the sooner I don't have to mow the better.

My house has sort of become a mess - not too horrible... but enough that I'm over it. But it's hard - I have moved a-lot of my hobbies and projects to the living room to keep an eye on Wiley since we've been keeping him closed off to just a few rooms in the house - mainly just the living room. It'll be nice when I can get my office together and set back up the way I wanted/needed. I have several books I want to organize better on my book shelves.

Bits and pieces of the news has stressed me out enough to remind me why I hate the news and that it's good to avoid it mostly. I do hear bits of NPR in the mornings and afternoons to and from work. Thinking about the damage he has been causing in this country and the world reminds me of a migraine that doesn't seem to go away. It just lingers. I wonder how many of his supporters still support him after the things he has done in the last several months.

Bread Dread

I didn't get my first try at whole wheat bread done. I got the yeast mix too hot. It didn't rise at all. Ended up throwing out a lovely smelling brown brick. Still, it's a learning process. I may try again tomorrow.

I also have to make beef stew tomorrow; we're having a friend over.  Wish me luck.

Oh, and I've watched episodes 2 and 3 of Dr. Who. I imagine I'll have some thoughts soon.

I picked up a Guardian pinch hit for [community profile] unsent_letters_exchange. I had two ideas for it, so when reveals were delayed, I wrote the other one as a treat. The first is set over three successive nights before and during the Hanga arc, and the second one is established relationship, with Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei passing notes during a state meeting in Dixing, in handwavy everyone-lives post-canon.

Title: a pocketful of change (4771 words) [General Audiences]
Fandom: 镇魂 | Guardian (TV 2018)
Relationships: Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan
Additional Tags: Missing Scene, Set before and during the Hanga arc (episodes 9 to 11), unsent letter, Pre-Relationship, Mutual Pining, SID politics, Epistolatory format: Letter

Summary: Lost in the past, Shen Wei shoved his hands into his jacket pockets. His fingers met small hard balls on smooth sticks and recognised them instantly. Heart clenching, he withdrew the pocket’s entire contents: three lollipops, a little ziplock bag filled with dried fish, and a wad of pages torn from a notebook and roughly folded. The outside of the paper was unmarked, but its surface texture bore evidence of the handwriting within.

He was still wearing Zhao Yunlan’s jacket. Whatever was written on these pages wasn’t meant for his eyes.

Title: A Passing Grade in Diplomacy (4062 words) [Teen and Up]
Fandom: 镇魂 | Guardian (TV 2018)
Relationships: Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan
Additional Tags: Post-Canon, Alternate Universe - Everyone Lives/Nobody Dies, Politics, meetings, Established Relationship, Banter, passing notes, Warning: internalised slut-shaming, just briefly tho

Summary: Next time, bring lollipops! Zhao Yunlan jotted in a spare corner of his page. He underlined it twice and went back to doodling more leaves on his tree, which was bushy and verdant like the new plantings in the streets near the Dragon Gate. He was experimenting with vines and curling tendrils when characters appeared out of nowhere, beneath his reminder.

Check your right-hand jacket pocket.

Murderbot TV episode 3

Unsure how I feel about having 22 minute episodes (sorry, "30 minute episodes"). On the one hand, short and quick enough to watch. On the other hand, this entire episode is essentially half an episode: In Which Our Heroes Travel To DeltFall And MurderBot Looks Around.

Enjoyable, but this kind of episode feels like it is meant for watching entire seasons all at once, where it would just blend in to the before and after. They spent too much time arguing in the shuttle for it to feel like it stands alone at all.

The security footage of what the Gurathin and Bharadwaj are doing back home was pointless, but I guess Character Building or something.

Long Weekend

I'm so very, very thankful that the new CEO at Unnamed Nonprofit hasn't tried to change anything when it comes to us having extra long weekends around holidays. Hell, if anything he's even better than the former CEO on that front, as he's added extra time here and there for us.

On that note: yesterday was my twelve year anniversary at Unnamed Nonprofit. Time really fucking flies, huh? There are only five people in the entire company who've been there longer than me, and two of them are probably going to be retiring within the next year or so. So that's also a bit terrifying.

Anyway, I managed to get a whopping ten hours of sleep last night, and it was lovely. It cut into my plans for today, admittedly, but the fact that I don't have to go back to work until Tuesday means I still have plenty of time for writing fanfiction, and playing video games, and maybe even watching some movies/TV shows if I can focus on them long enough to watch something new-to-me.

To the surprise of everyone, including me, I've stuck with my planned schedule for the week. I went and bought groceries after work yesterday, so I've got enough to cover me until my next paycheck and I can make some burgers this weekend too. I decided to go with edibles for my relaxation aid, so I picked up a pack at the dispensary on my way back from the grocery store, but they were having a holiday sale so I had enough left over to get some beer too without going over my budget.

I'm not planning on leaving the hotel the rest of the long weekend, although that could always potentially change. Honestly, though, I'll be happy if I can manage to not even have to leave my room for the entire time. That would be great.

"Mythes et légendes" artbook review

This artbook is the "collection of pretty pictures by various people" type of art book rather than the "includes tutorials by a single artist" type of artbook. I like both these types of artbooks and own multiple of each, as well as "collection of pretty pictures by single artist" and "includes tutorials by various artists".

It's published by YBY Éditions, with text in both French and English. The text is titles for the illustrations and sometimes a few sentences about the content.

My favourites were (featured here as pictures of the pages):

I like the use of light to portray intimacy.
Eros and Psyche, by Robbuz

The minimalist use of colour here is really neat.
Doctor Faustus, by Couple Of Kooks

The green and purple work so well together!

I love the multiple light sources.
Moonlight, by Sara Deek

Transmasc/transfem yin/yang is so cool!

The book contains 46 illustrations total and I enjoyed all of them.

20 + 7 icons for retro_icontest

Ooof, I picked the by far most time-consuming challenge from [community profile] somein30 for our current [community profile] retro_icontest round: All Things Random! I regret nothing! :D First I had to create all the randomized sets for the 13 people who signed up (7 of them entered sets, that's a great turnout!), and then I had to make my own set, and some of those prompts were *hard*!

This is the fourth time I've done this, the previous times are here and here and here.

Teasers:

And then here's the same thing again (in a different order!) with prompts and inspirations and my comments:
