Fic: 'Not through words, but the first ray of dawn' (Étoile)

And it's a bit of a surprise, because new American (/half-American) comedy in a modern setting is really not my usual kind of thing, but here we are. Étoile first caught my attention via a link to this gifset [er, big spoiler], then after clicking around a bit, finding some stuff about Cheyenne and deciding I had to know more about who she was, I decided to give the show a try. There is definitely some stuff about it that doesn't work for me, but the bits that do work really work, and on the whole it's loads of fun. Tobias and Cheyenne are, as I thought, among the highlights of the bits that work for me, but less expectedly, Geneviève has become my fave, and after watching the excellent finale I was inspired to write a little thing about her. I don't exactly know what I'm doing—live-action fandoms are not easy for me, especially one as fast-paced as this—and I'm not sure how far the ideas in this fic are really sound, but for now:

Working with or without a Plan

Are you planning out every detail of your story? Or writing on the fly carried by inspiration? A little of both?**
I have notes all over the place. When an idea hits I'll jot it down on anything handy. I should really work on being more organized.
That might explain why my current WIP is looking a little bit too much like the crime board picture. I don't even know how that happened. *facepalm*
It didn't start out with a mystery to be solved. It wasn't planned. That was a damn throwaway line.
I'm pushing through it, and I still like the story I'm working on, but a clear path forward would sure as hell help. Still, progress is happening.
**I refer to writing a lot because that's what I'm working on, but dusting off works in progress also includes art, podfic, or any other creative work.

The urge to slap CVS into next week
Jun. 11th, 2025 09:57 pmcornerofmadnessSo I went to pick up an ungodly amount of meds from the cvs near the parents' they texted me yesterday about 2 that it was too early to fill. I get there and get the others but NOT my toujeo insulin. Where is this?
CVS - um it's on hold

Me - WHY is it on hold?
CVS - you have to get in another line to ask that question
Me- goes to other line, muttering
CVS - we don't know WHY it's on hold
Me - is it covered because my insurance keeps threatening to kick this one out of formulary.
CVS -yes, we can fill it now or do you want to come back?
Me - i live 18 miles away. FILL IT (took them over an hour to manage it which should be a good thing because they didn't have the humalog yesterday. You know the most common insulin out there)
I keep saying I'll be doing a pride month book rec and I keep failing so here have all the LGBT books I've read this year (amazon links, no covers because I'm tired and in pain)

Disco Witches of Fire Island magic realism 1980s so this is steeped in both the casual sex scene and the horrors of the rise of AIDS (so this is not really a happy story)

What I Just Finished Reading:
The Witch's Orchard by Archer Sullivan PI mystery very much enjoyed this (no having the sleuth do something stupid to get in danger!)
West By God - horror, this was...honestly it could have been a journalist mystery without any supernatural elements and been better for it.
What I am Currently Reading:
Anima rising - a good reads Frankenstein retelling giveaway win but also real person fanfic of Klimt and others and so far it's not great.
Dark Entry - a short suspense/horror novel I got last year
A Spell to Wake the Dead - a YA horror arc that is...good but man one of the main characters I want to drop in the ocean
What I Plan to Read Next: Something for the popsugar challenge probably or one of the books I won from Goodreads

Jun. 12th, 2025 12:16 amToday's theme is birthdays. Mine’s in a few days so it got me thinking. Have your characters celebrate their birthdays, the birthdays of their loved ones. Do they arrange a birthday month celebration for themselves? Do they avoid birthdays? Are they happy or sad? What is a birthday like for an immortal character? What if they’re a clone? There are so many possibilities to explore
Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and the fandom's full name
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the above-mentioned spoiler cut.
If your story has possible triggers, please warn for them in the subject line!
