“Ryo?”


A small hand tugging at his arm brought Ryo awake with a start and he opened his eyes to see his foster son standing by his bed.


“Bikky, what’s up? Are you okay?”


“’m fine, just… Can I sleep with you tonight?”


“Sure. Hop in. You have a bad dream or something?”


“No, nothing like that.” The boy scrambled over Ryo to the vacant side of the bed and flopped down, pulling the covers up to his ears. “It’s Mister Bumble.” It was Bikky’s turn to look after his class’s pet hamster for the weekend. He’d been so excited about that, but now…


“I thought you liked him.”


“I do, but he’s been running on his exercise wheel since I went to bed and it’s so noisy I can’t sleep! Why couldn’t he do that in the daytime, while I was awake?”


Ryo laughed softly. “Hamsters are nocturnal, they sleep during the day and run around at night searching for food because it’s easier for them to hide from predators that way.”


“Oh. I didn’t know that”


“How about we put his cage in the living room tomorrow so he won’t disturb you at night?”


“Mm, okay. G’night Ryo.”
