Berkeley Rose had his speech all worked out, he knew exactly what he’d say to Diana; he’d rehearsed it over and over on his way to her apartment. He’d knock on her door and when she opened it he’d take her hand and say, “I’ve been such a fool, always pining after the next pretty face and never really seeing what’s been right in front of me the whole time. Can you ever forgive me?” Then he’d beg her to give him another chance, and she’d say yes; she had to because he couldn’t lose her, not now.
Only when he got to her building, Diana was on her way out. She brushed him off before he could say anything, telling him she didn’t have time to talk, and the words he’d planned went right out of his head.
“So, I heard he proposed.”
“Yes. We’re going to discuss the arrangements on tonight’s date, actually.”
Berkeley’s heart sank. So Diana had said ‘yes’ to this other man and he’d lost his chance. Or had he?
He took off his glasses, tucking them away so they wouldn’t get broken. “I see. Well in that case…”
If Diana didn’t show up for her date, she wouldn’t be able to discuss any ‘arrangements’. Grabbing the woman he loved, Berkeley threw her over his shoulder. One way or another he’d make her listen to what he had to say. So what if he wasn’t playing fair? He’d come too far to give up now.
