As far as anyone could tell, one of the two victims had simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time. A slightly overweight middle-aged man, probably looking to get himself in better shape for summer, he’d been jogging in Central Park early on a Sunday morning, when the sun was only just coming up. It had been his bad luck to stumble across a body dump in progress, and he’d died for it, shot in the back as he’d tried to get away, his phone in his hand, dialling 911.
The only slight consolation Dee and Ryo could see was that the guy was single, no siblings, both parents deceased, and he’d died quickly; there hadn’t been time for him to suffer.
The other victim hadn’t been so lucky. A well-dressed young woman in her early twenties, her death had been slow and lingering. Whoever had killed her had been after something; her injuries spoke of methodical torture, the kind carried out in order to elicit information.
Whether her killer had persuaded her to talk before she died was as yet unknown. Dee hoped she’d taken her secrets with her, if only so the murderer would have to keep looking; he’d be frustrated, and frustration led to mistakes. If he’d already got what he was after, he could simply drop out of sight and they might never track him down. That wasn’t an acceptable option; the bastard had killed two people that the police knew of, and others could still be in danger.
“I want this guy, whoever he is,” Dee ground out, anger clear in his voice.
“Me too,” Ryo agreed. “He’s not getting away with this, no matter what it takes.” Crimes of passion were bad enough, but this was cold-blooded murder. Someone was gonna pay.
