“What’s up with you this morning?” Ryo asked as Dee, arriving late for work, sank heavily into his seat and slumped across his desk, groaning.


“I’m exhausted and I have a headache,” Dee muttered in response. “Hardly got any sleep last night.”


“Well it’s your own fault for drinking too much.” Ryo had no sympathy for people whose idea of a fun night was to drink until they passed out.


Gingerly raising his head from folded arms, Dee glowered balefully at his partner then winced at the pain it caused. “Gee, thanks. I had one beer, then a fight broke out and some drunken moron busted a bottle over my head. Spent most of last night in the ER, havin’ splinters of glass picked out of my scalp.”


Ryo was instantly contrite. “Sorry, Dee; I had no idea.”


“Maybe that’ll teach ya not to jump to conclusions.” Dee was too tired and sore to stay mad at his partner.


“Are you okay?”


“No concussion, just a small cut; I’ll live.” Dee lowered his head to his folded arms again.


“Still, maybe you should have called in sick.”


“Nah, it’s not that bad. I’ll be fine once the painkillers kick in.”
