Summary: Their current case reminds Ryo of an incident he’d sooner forget.

Their current case has stirred up memories for Ryo he’d prefer not to think about, that he’d thought he’d buried years ago; memories of a trip with his aunt, a beautiful girl, a controlling brother, a murder, and a possible suicide.


It was over ten years ago, he’d still been in his teens, still struggling with the loss of his parents less than a year earlier. The trip had been meant to take him out of himself, give him a break, a change of scene, away from anyone he knew, and from the constant scrutiny, the whispers and sly insinuations about his parents being criminals who’d got what was coming to them.


His aunt had thought getting away from it all would do him good and in some ways it had. He’d met her, Charlotte, and maybe fallen a little bit in love. Perhaps she’d felt the same way and that was how she’d gotten the courage to deal with her brother.


‘But did she have to end her own life too? She was so sad the last time we met. I wish I could get her out of my mind; sometimes it would be a relief to just forget.’
