“I hate places like this,” Dee grumbled, swinging his flashlight back and forth to illuminate the darkest corners of the basement beneath the derelict warehouse. “So damned creepy!”
“Worried there might be ghosts?” Ryo teased as he continued the search, alert but unworried, making sure none of the stolen merchandise that had been stashed here during a spate of robberies had been missed.
Dee scowled at his back. “More like rats, and bats, and maybe snakes.” Those were three of the things he disliked the most.
“Any snakes would be dormant, the weather’s too cold for them, and bats won’t harm you. Rats, on the other hand…” Ryo trailed off, grinning.
“If that’s your idea of a pep talk you can stick it where the sun don’t shine. Thought you were supposed be on my side.” Dee had only taken a few more steps when the beam of his flashlight suddenly flickered and went out. “Shit!”
“You’ve only yourself to blame. I told you not to leave the batteries in when you weren’t using it. I don’t suppose you’ve got any spares with you either.”
“Didn’t think I’d need ‘em!” Dee slunk closer to his partner, not afraid of the dark exactly, but wary of what might be lurking where he couldn’t see it. “We’re almost done here, right? There’s nothin’ left to find, this was only meant to be a final sweep just to be sure, and we haven’t found anything so we should just head out.”
“Couple of rooms left; we should check them just to be thorough.”
“Aw, c’mon, dude! You’re killin’ me here!”
Ryo snickered. “Thought you were a big, brave, detective! You’ve got your gun, you can handle any rats that get too curious.”
“And then I’d have ta explain why I was firin’ at rodents, all that frickin’ paperwork.”
“You could go back to the car while I finish up here.”
“How? Can’t see a damned thing without your flashlight, I’d never find my way out. Be lost down here forever!”
“You’d better stick with me then.”
“That’s the first sensible thing you’ve said!”
The End
