“Just do as I say and nobody has to get hurt!”

 
The kid couldn’t have been more than sixteen, but he had a gun and that gave him the power to order around people bigger and older than he was. Dee and Ryo had seen this kind of thing way too many times, and it never got any easier. The kicker was, the two of them weren’t even on duty; they’d only stopped off at the small corner grocery store on their way home from work to pick up some milk and a loaf of bread. Nevertheless, they were here and a crime was being committed.

 
The elderly woman behind the counter looked scared and willing to do anything.
 

“Open the register and put all the money in here.” A battered holdall was tossed onto the counter.
 

Dee had his hands where they could be seen, but Ryo was out of sight behind some shelves, slipping into view, weapon drawn.

 
“Police! Drop the gun!”

 
The kid spun around, face going white, and Dee moved, disarming him before he could get off a shot.

 
“You lose, kid. Didn’t anyone ever tell ya not to attempt armed robbery in front of cops?”
