Serial killers were something everyone involved in law enforcement dreaded. Knowing there was someone out there targeting certain people for death, and being unable to stop the individual responsible as the bodies piled up…
It did nothing for the public’s faith in the police, but what could anyone do that they weren’t already doing? They’d had the press publish warnings for anyone who matched the killer’s preferences to avoid going anywhere alone, patrols had been increased, but the cops needed tangible evidence to follow. So far there’d been precious little of that.
Chances were, the murderer would seem perfectly normal to anyone who knew him. He might have a steady job, maybe even a family, an evil mind hidden behind a veneer of respectability; that was often the case. Afterwards, when he was caught, neighbours would say that he didn’t seem like the type. He was always polite and friendly…
Ryo rubbed his eyes tiredly; every precinct in the city was working overtime on this one. Five deaths so far, all of them blonde women in their early- to mid-thirties, all of them well-dressed professionals. A lawyer, a real estate agent, an office manager, and two loan advisors, all stabbed to death. No fingerprints, no murder weapon, no theft from the bodies except for their shoes.
Coming up behind his partner, Dee rested his hands on Ryo’s shoulders, massaging the tense muscles.
“We’ll get this sick bastard. Maybe not us personally, but someone in the NYPD will.”
“But how long will it take? How many more women will die before he slips up and leaves evidence we can use?”
“Can’t tell ya that, but we’re doin’ everything we can.”
“It’s not enough.” Ryo turned to look up at his partner. “What turns people into killers?”
“I don’t even wanna know.”
