“Damn, this is just what we don’t need.” Dee got out of the car, leaving the hazard warning lights flashing. Fortunately, the bad weather meant there weren’t too many cars on the road, meaning the chances of getting rear-ended were small.

Ryo slid from the passenger seat, slammed the door behind him, and looked gloomily at the car as snow settled on his hair. With all the potential hazards winter weather could throw their way, this was one even he hadn’t anticipated.

“Safe to say the car won’t be going anywhere without the help of a tow truck.”

“Yeah, and good luck gettin’ anyone from the motor pool to come out in this.” All Dee wanted was to get back to the 27th precinct and warm up with a mug of hot coffee from the shop across the street. Instead, they were stranded with an unusable car.

A dozen times they’d almost skidded on snow or ice, and they’d narrowly avoided being sideswiped by several other vehicles, but they were practiced at driving in the kinds of weather New York endured in winter. What they hadn’t been expecting was to hit the worst pothole in the city, hidden from view by the snow already covering the ground, and break the frickin’ axle!

They’d tried to reach the precinct via the radio in their unmarked car, but between the tall buildings, fierce winds, and heavy snow they couldn’t get a signal though. Their cell phones weren’t any more helpful.

“We passed a diner a couple of blocks back; with luck they should have a pay phone. We can call the precinct from there.”

“Assumin’ the phone lines aren’t down.” Dee kicked the car’s tire. “Stupid car.”

Ryo hid a smile. “It’s more the pothole’s fault than the car’s.”

Dee turned his glare in the general direction of the offending pothole. “Someone should fill the damned thing in.”

“We sort of have. At least no one else can suffer the same fate while our car’s stuck in it.”

“Always lookin’ on the bright side.” Dee locked the car, just in case anyone should come along and try to steal it, not that it would do them any good. “A diner, you said.” He perked up a bit. “A diner would have hot coffee.”

“I imagine it would, among other things.”

“So what’re we standin’ here for? Least we can wait somewhere warm.”
