“One carrot?” Dee asked, confused as Ryo put the single vegetable into his shopping basket. They’d stopped off at a corner grocery store after work because Ryo had said he needed to pick up a few things. “It’s not even a good one.” Ryo had selected the saddest, wrinkliest carrot in the box.

 
“I have plenty of carrots at home, but they’re too big and heavy,” he explained.
 

“For what?” Now Dee was even more confused.
 

Ryo laughed. “Bikky and I built a snowman this morning, but it needs a nose, and carrots are sort of traditional for that.”

 
Dee grinned at his lover, understanding. “So you picked out one that nobody would wanna eat?”
 

Blushing faintly, Ryo nodded. “It just seemed less wasteful that way. We collected some small pebbles back in the summer for snowman eyes and mouths, but we never found one that would work as a nose, and anyway…”
 

“Carrots are traditional, I get it. You’re crazy, you know that?”

 
“Maybe I am, but Bikky won’t be a kid forever. He’s fourteen; how much longer will he want to build snowmen? This could be the last year.”
 

“Better get you home with your snowman’s nose then.”
