“Oooh, I love your accent,” the young woman behind Dee in the queue for ice cream exclaimed. “Are you from Australia?” Her own accent was southern, maybe Alabama or Georgia.
“No, I’m from New York.”
“Oh, I always get those two mixed up!” She giggled, batting eyelashes thick with mascara at him. “I’m here for college. Are you on vacation?”
“Yeah, me and my partner wanted to escape the winter snow.” Dee handed over his money and took his ice creams, turning away towards where Ryo was waiting, perched on a low wall in the shade.
“It snows in New York? I didn’t know that! I thought it was always hot and sunny there.”
“I wish.”
“It hardly ever snows back home. You know, I don’t think I’ve ever seen real snow.” For some reason, the girl was now following Dee. She hadn’t even waited in line long enough to buy herself an ice cream.
“Lucky you.” Dee lengthened his stride, trying to escape his unwanted hanger-on, but she didn’t seem willing to take the hint.
“Do you go skiing? I always wanted to try that, I’ve seen it on TV, and it looks fun. I think I’d be good at it.”
Ahead of him, Dee could see Ryo trying not to laugh at his predicament. Three more long strides, and Dee handed one of the ice creams to his lover.
“Here ya go, babe.”
“Thanks, Dee.” In a rare display of possessiveness, Ryo reached up and pulled Dee down to kiss him on the lips before turning to the young woman. “You’re wasting your time; he’s already taken.”
Without a word, she scurried away in search of better prospects.
Dee sank down on the wall beside his lover. “I was beginnin’ to think she’d never get the message. I mean, I didn’t wanna make a scene, but…” He shook his head. “What’re kids even learnin’ in school these days anyway? First she thinks I’m Australian, then she thinks New York is hot and sunny!”
“Maybe she has New York confused with New Zealand.”
“It snows there too though, right?”
“As far as I know it does, at least up in the mountains.”
“That’s what I thought, and she claimed to be a college student.”
Ryo licked his ice cream. “I’m guessing she’s not majoring in Geography,” he said with a grin.
“Yeah. If she is, she’s in big trouble.”
The End
