“I’m sorry, Ryo! I didn’t mean to!”
 

Bikky stood in the hallway looking like he’d been swimming in a pig wallow. In fact, Ryo was pretty sure he’d seen cleaner pigs. The boy shuffled his feet, adding more muddy streaks to the tiled floor and Ryo couldn’t help himself; he burst out laughing.

 
“You look like a swamp monster! How on earth did you get in this state?”

 
“Nigel wanted to play soccer, and the pitch was a bit muddy.”
 

“I can imagine. Not the best weather for soccer, is it?”
 

“I guess not.” Bikky looked down at himself, frowning. “Basketball is WAY cleaner.”
 

Ryo nodded agreement even though the boy wasn’t looking at him. “There’s a lot less mud indoors. Usually. Right now it looks like you’re wearing half the soccer pitch.”
 

“Are you mad at me?”
 

Ryo chuckled. “You’re ten, Biks; at that age, I think it’s physically impossible for kids to stay clean. It’s nothing some soap and water can’t fix; just hop in the shower, and leave your clothes on until you’ve rinsed the worst off. I’ll get the mop and start cleaning up out here.”
 

Raising a child was already proving to be an adventure!
