“Where’re you going with all that?” Owen demanded as Jack’s new hire strode past, loaded down with a pile of blankets and old towels.
“The vaults,” Jones replied. “It’s cold down there in the cells, all bare concrete floors and benches. The least we can do is try to make the residents a bit more comfortable.”
“They’re mostly Weevils, used to living in the sewers and you want to give them blankets?” Owen laughed. “You must be soft in the head! Try to be nice to them and they’ll rip your arm off, or worse.”
Jones turned to glare at Torchwood’s medic.
“I thought you were supposed to be a doctor. Most of the creatures down there are your patients, brought here because they’re either injured or sick. They may not be on the same level of sentience as we are, but they’re not animals, and even if they were, vets treat dogs and cats better than you’re treating the beings under your care. You might be happy to ignore their discomfort, but I’m the one who’s expected to take care of them, and I’ll do it my way. Every living thing deserves to be treated with kindness and compassion.”
