The spaceship is just drifting on the slow tides of space, a ravaged hulk, victim of some unknown disaster.

 
“What happened to the crew?” Martha asks.
 

“Who knows? Maybe they were rescued or escaped in the lifepods. Maybe they died, or unscrupulous salvage hunters killed them instead of offering assistance. There’d be a lot of money to be made from selling off the undamaged parts, although most legitimate salvage crews would tow an abandoned craft like this to the nearest space station.”
 

“Why are we here?”
 

“For this.” The Doctor unearths a small fragment of coral. “It’s been calling me.”
