Summary: Dee has dinner at Ryo’s place a couple of weeks into their relationship.

Written For: Jae's Monthly Drabble Challenge 206 - "You haven't bought me dinner yet".

Much to his own surprise, Ryo quickly adjusted to the changes in his and Dee’s relationship. Not so much the sex, which confused and embarrassed him as much as it excited him, but the kissing, and touching, and the holding hands whenever they could be sure nobody they knew would catch them.
It was surprisingly comfortable, and it made him realise how little had really changed. He’d simply stopped rebuffing most of Dee’s attempts at intimacy, and it had made him feel more relaxed. All the stress of wondering what he should do was gone, which made sense when he thought about it.
Dee seemed happier to, and why wouldn’t he, now he was finally getting what he’d wanted all along? Even if he wasn’t getting full access to his partner’s body as often as he might have liked, Ryo was making an effort to be more… accommodating than he’d been previously, and Dee was showing his appreciation in various ways. Like now.
“So,” Dee said, as he helped Ryo with the dishes, because one thing that hadn’t changed was how often he came over for dinner. “Looks like we’ve both got Wednesday off. You wanna do somethin’, maybe go somewhere?”
“Like where?”
“Wherever ya want.” Dee shrugged. “I’m easy.”
“I know that.” The words were out before Ryo could stop himself and he blushed, but far from taking offence, Dee just laughed.
“Guess I deserved that.” He turned serious. “I meant what I said though. I just want ya to be happy.”
“I am.” Ryo smiled at his lover. “Happier than I ever expected to be.”
“So how about it?”
“We’re washing the dishes!”
Dee snorted laughter again. “I didn’t mean THAT, although I wouldn’t say no if you’re offerin’. I meant my question: what d’you wanna do on our day off? Or do ya already have plans for cleanin’, laundry, grocery shoppin’, stuff like that?”
“Uh, no, I think I’m about up to date with chores, so we could do something Wednesday if you’d like.”
“Nuh uh,” Dee scolded. “That’s not how it works. I don’t want ya agreein’ to somethin’ just because ya think it’s what I want. That wouldn’t be fair to either of us.”
“Sorry, I’m not used to all this dating stuff.”
“Been a long time since you were in a relationship?” That was something Dee had often wondered about but never dared to ask.
Frowning, Ryo shook his head. “I’m not sure I’ve ever been in what you’d call a proper relationship. I mean, I had a few girlfriends over the years, but that wasn’t like this, what we’ve got. This is different somehow.”
“Yeah. It is,” Dee agreed, smiling. “Everything’s different with you. Better.”
Ducking his head, Ryo concentrated on washing a saucepan, trying to hide his blush. Dee took pity on him.
“Okay, Wednesday: ideas? Suggestions?”
“Um…” Ryo thought hard, but he could only come up with one thing. “Well, you haven’t bought me dinner yet…”
“An oversight on my part I should definitely do somethin’ about, considerin’ how often you’ve fed me.” There was a glint of humour in Dee’s green eyes. “That’s end of the day stuff though. How ‘bout before? You wanna go skydivin’, or rent a hot air balloon, or…”
Ryo cut him off, laughing. “Those are crazy ideas! How about something a little more down to earth?”
“Coney Island? Statue of Liberty? Central Park Zoo? Or is that stuff too touristy for ya? There’s always bowlin’, ice skatin’, or we could catch a movie matinee.”
“Or we could just go for a walk in the park, maybe take a picnic.”
“Thought ya said it was my turn to provide the food? Not in so many words, but that’s what I heard.”
“So we’ll stop by a deli, pick up sandwiches or something.” Ryo set the last pan in the drainer and turned to his lover. “I really don’t mind what we do, as long as we’re together.”
“’Kay, that’s settled then. Picnic, weather permittin’, but I’ll bring the food. If the weather’s not so good, we’ll find somethin’ to do indoors, hit the mall, see a movie, or… Hey, how ‘bout indoor mini golf?”
Ryo leaned in for a kiss. “Sounds fun. Now finish drying the dishes while I make coffee.”
“Whatever ya say, babe. And whatever we do Wednesday, afterwards I’m buyin’ ya dinner, but not at Burger King or the nearest pizza place; we’ll go to a restaurant.”
“I’ll hold you to that.”
“You can hold me to anything ya want.” Dee waggled his eyebrows, his grin widening as Ryo blushed again. “Call that an optional extra, not compulsory. We’ll go out, have ourselves a good time, which we definitely deserve, enjoy a meal at a decent restaurant, and then see where the evenin’ takes us.” Dee put the last pan away and hung up the dishtowel.
“I’m looking forward to it.” Ryo flashed Dee a wry smile. “I just hope the Chief doesn’t cancel our day off.”
“He better not. If he does, I might just play hooky.”
“You’d be a bit bored all by yourself, wouldn’t you?”
“Right, ‘cause of course you’d never ditch work. Well, if our plans get derailed, I guess we can always reschedule for our next day off. I can be flexible.” Dee accepted the cup of coffee Ryo handed him. “In fact, maybe later tonight you’ll let me demonstrate exactly how flexible I can be.” He gave a cheeky wink and Ryo shook his head in fond exasperation, wondering if there’d ever come a day when he wouldn’t blush at his lover’s innuendos.
Still, Dee wouldn’t be Dee if he didn’t say things like that, and Ryo knew he wouldn’t change his partner even if he could. This was the man he’d fallen head over heels in love with, and he was perfect just the way he was.
