All of Ianto’s hopes for the future lay shattered on the ground, and Ianto’s heart was shattering too. He crumpled to the concrete beside what was left of Lisa, her body still partly encased in metal, not far from what had once been Annie, the pizza delivery girl.

 
She’d talked about the two of them being upgraded together; he’d heard the words but been unable to make any sense of them, the sound washing over him like so much white noise. Lisa, his Lisa, with her black hair and smooth, dark skin, was gone; what remained was an abomination, a Frankenstein’s monster.

 
Misery swamped Ianto as he realised everything he’d tried to do had been for nothing. His plans and dreams had been doomed to failure from the start, but he’d been so desperate, so much in love, that he hadn’t recognised the truth. Now he’d lost everything.

 
He couldn’t look at the team, couldn’t tear his gaze away from Lisa’s broken body, but he was dimly aware of Jack coming to stand over him, Webley still in hand. Weeping, Ianto waited. He knew what the punishment for his actions must be; he only hoped it would be over quickly.
