“What’re we waiting for?” Ianto asked, sitting in the co-pilot’s seat. They’d arrived at their destination but were now in a holding pattern some four hundred thousand miles from the planet, basically drifting in space.
“Permission to land,” Jack replied calmly. “They’ll scan us, make sure we’re who we claim to be, then transmit coordinates for us to land.”
“Why? Every other planet we’ve been to, we’ve just contacted the proper authorities, stated our business, and been assigned an approach vector.”
“Security is rather more thorough here,” Jack explained. “It has to be. Melliphon is where some of the most valuable gemstones in the universe are mined; as with anything of great value, there are plenty of people looking for a chance to steal some for their own profit.”
“Ah.” Ianto nodded. “That explains why they have to be so careful about who they let in.”
“Few people are licensed to come even this close,” Jack said.
“But we are?”
“I have a contract to carry cargo to and from the planet, as well as a sizeable account at their biggest bank.”
“What happens if someone tries to approach without authorisation?”
“Their ship gets vaporised. Nobody tries a second time.”
