Bikky was jolted from a deep sleep by the sudden, unexpected sound of something heavy falling in the living room. He lay still, listening intently, wondering if he’d imagined it. Or maybe it had come from outside and not in the apartment at all. On cold, fall nights, sound could carry.
 

For several long moments there was complete silence, then he heard scuffling noises and he thought he could detect someone whispering. The apartment was being robbed!
 

Bikky cursed his bad luck. Ryo was working late so he was home alone; his foster father had called earlier to say he’d been asked to cover part of someone else’s shift and didn’t know what time he’d be home.
 

Quietly, Bikky slipped out of bed, picked up his baseball bat, and crept out of his room to confront the burglars, turning the light on…

 
There was Ryo, on hands and knees, blinking owlishly at him from where he’d been picking up what he’d knocked over.

 
“What’re you doing?”
 

“It was dark, I tripped over the coffee table. Forgot I’d moved it.”
 

“Why didn’t you just turn the light on?”
 

“I didn’t want to wake you.”
 

“Great job. I thought we had burglars!”
