Summary: With Buffy being late home, Joyce is determined to be a good host to her daughter’s friend.

Joyce was delighted her daughter seemed to be settling in so well at her new school. She was already making friends, and they were all so nice. First Willow and Xander, and now this lovely, polite girl, Darla. She wasn’t so sure about that boy from the other night, what was his name? Angel, that was it. He’d seemed a bit old to be hanging out with Buffy, but he’d apparently been tutoring her, and Buffy did have a lot of catching up to do…

 
Darla, however, was here now, and Buffy wasn’t; she was supposed to be studying with Willow. Maybe she’d forgotten that Darla was coming over tonight. Well, surely she’d be home soon. In the meantime, Joyce was determined to make Buffy’s friend feel welcome, despite her absentee daughter. If Darla was anything like Buffy and her other friends, she’d no doubt be hungry. Teenagers always were.

 
“Would you like something to eat?”
 

“Yes, I would.”
 

Next thing Joyce knew, she was waking up in the hospital. Apparently she’d fallen and cut herself on something. It was most confusing, and she felt terrible about the poor girl who’d seen it happen.

 
She hadn’t even gotten her snack.
