“Why are the places we haveta use for surveillance always so frickin’ creepy?” Dee complained. “Other cops get to set up in occupied apartments. Last time, Drake and JJ practically got adopted by the old lady livin’ there, but d’we get that? No, we get a crummy room in a disused tenement buildin’, with no electricity, no heat, and a bathroom that barely has runnin’ water. The old badger must really hate us.”
“It’s not the Chief’s fault the place we need to watch happens to be in a rundown neighbourhood. This is the only building with a clear line of sight to both the entrance, and the room our guy is using to conduct business, and anyway, if anyone happens to see us, they’ll just think we’re squatters.”
Dee huffed annoyance. “It sure isn’t a glamorous assignment.” He tugged on the shabby coat he was wearing, trying to wrap it more tightly around him against the chill. “We’ll likely freeze to death. Wouldn’t be so bad durin’ the day, but we get stuck with the night shift. How is that fair?”
Ryo didn’t bother replying; Dee knew as well as he did that it was down to their work schedule, which had been set before the investigation into property developer Mason Roland’s ties to a certain crime family had even been proposed.
“It sucks! We gotta sit here most of the night, freezin’ our asses off surrounded by eerie noises. Place like this is bound to be haunted. Hell, the ghosts are prob’ly watchin’ us already, waitin’ to pounce.”
“I hardly think we need to worry about that, Dee. Let’s just keep our eyes on the room across the way and leave any resident ghosts in peace.”
“Fine. I’m just not so sure they’ll show us the same consideration.”
