Police work could be unpredictable; when you arrived at a crime scene, you were never sure what you’d find, even if you had a basic idea of what crime had been committed.

Armed robbery? Are the robbers still there, or have they already fled? With or without the loot? Was anyone injured or killed during the commission of the crime?

Homicide? How was the deceased killed? Is there more than one body? Is the murderer in custody? Is the victim’s identity known?

The answers to those questions, among others, determined how the attending police officers handled the situation, and whether backup or other skilled personnel, such as medics or the bomb squad, might be needed. It made for a varied, if often hazardous, career.

There were, however, some things that COULD be predicted. Witnesses were, for the most part, not particularly reliable, most murder scenes were messy, and when the cops showed up to take someone into custody, very few criminals gave up easily.

“Shit,” Dee muttered as Lonnie Parsons spotted them and made like a rabbit. “It’s hot, I’m tired, and now we gotta catch this idiot?”

Ryo nodded. “Looks that way.”

Just like that, the chase was on.
