“What’re you doing in here?” Buffy snapped. “How many times do I have to tell you to stay out of my room?” She envied Willow and Xander, they were so lucky to be only children; having a younger sister sucked. Dawn got into everything, and then when Buffy got mad at her, she went whining to their mom and Buffy was the one who got into trouble.
“I was just looking. I wanted to borrow your blue top.”
“Without asking me? How would you like it if I came into your room and took your stuff without permission? Except I’d never do that, because I have manners, unlike some people I could mention.” Then Buffy spotted a book open on her bed, and pushing past Dawn, she snatched it up. “Have you been reading my diary? What gives you the right to snoop?”
“You never tell me anything anymore!”
“Why would I? I’m a teenager and you’re a little kid!”
“I am not! You take that back!”
“You’re eleven, that means you’re still a kid, and it doesn’t give you the right to poke around in my things and read my diary! That’s private!”
Dawn smiled smugly, like the infuriating little brat she was. “Not anymore. So what’s a Slayer, and who’s Angel?”
“That’s none of your business.”
“Fine, don’t tell me, but if you don’t, I’ll tell mom, and then she’ll have tons of questions.”
“And you’ll be grounded for life for going through my things.”
“So what? She’ll ground you too, for all the times you sneak out at night. I’ll tell her all about that too.”
A chill went through Buffy. “How do you know about that?”
“Oh please. I’ve seen you sneaking in late, climbing back into your room, and I read your diary. If you don’t want people to know stuff, you probably shouldn’t write it down.” Dawn shrugged. “You should know by now; you can’t hide anything from me. I’ll always find out.”
Buffy seethed inside; never had her sister been more infuriating! “You know what you are? You’re a little creep!”
“Just tell me! I could help, cover for you with mom, stuff like that.”
“I don’t need your help.”
“I think you do. You’re not very good at hiding things. Your diary was easy to find.”
“That’s because I didn’t think I needed to hide it, in my own home, in my own ROOM, where you’re not supposed to go without my permission, especially when I’m not HERE!”
“Like that’s going to stop me. I snoop in mom’s room too, when she’s out. I found her diary months ago.”
“Liar! Mom doesn’t keep a diary.”
“She does too!”
“Oh yeah? Show me then.”
“Nope. You’d just tell mom and get me in trouble.”
“I’m going to tell her anyway.” Buffy glared at her little sister.
“No you won’t, because if you do, I’ll tell mom everything I know about you being a Slayer, and then you’ll be in even bigger trouble than me. So come on, just tell me, what’s a Slayer? Is that some kind of gang? Is Angel in it too? Is he your boyfriend? Do you kiss him?”
“Shut up!”
“Make me!”
Fuming, Buffy sat down on her bed, clutching her diary against her chest, as if that would protect it, and its contents, from her sister’s prying. “I’m not in a gang.”
“So what are the Slayers? A band? ‘Cause that would be way cool.”
“No. There aren’t any Slayers, there’s just one, and that’s me. I didn’t ask to be the Slayer, I don’t even want to be, but nobody gave me a choice. I was chosen.” Buffy’s shoulders slumped. “You can’t tell mom, Dawnie, it would just worry her, and she already has enough to worry about.”
“Okay, I won’t tell her. Wasn’t going to anyway. You know I’d never rat you out, not really.”
“Creep.”
“Delinquent.”
“Do you even know what that means?”
“No, not exactly, but I heard mom on the phone to dad, and she was worried that you might be one.”
“Well I’m not. I don’t get in trouble on purpose, it just happens, because I can’t tell anyone about being the Slayer.”
“You still haven’t told me what that is.”
Buffy shook her head. “You’re better off not knowing, it would give you nightmares.”
“Would not! I’m not scared of anything.”
“Then you’re an idiot. I’m scared all the time, because I know what’s out there, all the monsters and the demons and the vampires. As the Slayer, it’s my job to fight them, to protect Sunnydale and all the people who live here.”
“Come off it. You expect me to believe that? Monsters aren’t real.”
“I wish that was true, I really do. If you’d seen some of the things I have, you’d never want to go outside after dark again.” Buffy looked up at her sister, her eyes haunted. “I just want to keep you safe, Dawnie. Can you understand that? You’re a pain, but you’re the only sister I’ve got, and I don’t want to lose you. There are scary things out there, and I can’t be with you all the time to protect you.”
Dawn frowned, uncertain. “You’re really not kidding?”
Buffy shook her head. “Really not. Everyone thinks vampires and demons are just things made up for horror movies and stuff, but they’re not, they’re real, and I get to risk my life every night hunting them down and killing them. That’s what the Slayer does.”
“How can I help?” Dawn dropped onto the edge of the bed beside Buffy.
“You can’t.” Buffy reached for her sister’s hand and squeezed it. “I love that you want to, but you don’t have the strength; you’d get yourself killed, and I don’t want that. There are times you make me want to strangle you, but I think sisters are supposed to feel that way sometimes.”
“Can’t I do anything?” Dawn pleaded.
“You can keep everything I’ve told you a secret from mom, dad, and everyone else. No writing essays about me.”
“Okay, but only if you promise to tell me everything.”
“I can’t win, can I?”
“Nope. We’re sisters, so you kinda HAVE to tell me.”
With a put-upon sigh, Buffy nodded. “Fine. What d’you want to know?”
“Who is Angel?”
“He’s… a very handsome older boy. Mom’s met him, but I told her he was tutoring me on history.”
“But he’s not.”
“No.”
“Is he your boyfriend?”
“Nnnn, sort of? I mean I like him, but… Well, like I said, he’s older, and we’re not exactly dating, but we… hang out sometimes.”
“Do you kiss him? Does he kiss you?”
“Yeah.” Buffy smiled.
“Is it nice? Is he good at kissing?”
“Oh yeah, like you wouldn’t believe.”
“Tell me, PLEASE!” Dawn was practically bouncing.
“Not a word to anyone!”
“I swear, cross my heart!” Dawn suited her actions to her words.
“I don’t know, I’m not sure you’re old enough to know about stuff like that.”
“Buffy! Come on! Who else am I gonna learn all this stuff from?”
“Okay, okay, I’ll tell you, but you’d better keep quiet or we’ll both be in trouble.”
Little sisters were so annoying!

Date: 2025-03-04 06:08 pm (UTC)I'm glad for the distance between me and my sister. She's bossy and demanding, only ever contacts me when she wants something. I call her at Christmas and her birthday. She never calls me.
