Summary: Bernie Harris might be trouble, but he’s also useful.
Disclaimer: I don’t own Torchwood, or the characters.
A/N: Double drabble.
It would have been ridiculous to ever expect Bernie Harris to keep his nose clean; he was irresistibly drawn to anything he thought might make him a quick buck, and forever coming up with outlandish and totally implausible get rich quick schemes, most of which managed to spectacularly blow up in his face.
The sensible thing for Torchwood to have done would be to Retcon him and set him on the straight and narrow; once or twice, Jack had even considered doing so, except… With his unerring nose for trouble, Bernie was actually more use to the team if left to his own devices and discreetly monitored.
Anything a bit illegal going on in Cardiff, whether or not aliens were involved in any way, Bernie would find out about it and either take over or try to cut himself a slice of the action. Because of Bernie, Torchwood had managed to shut down dealers in alien drugs, smuggling of alien artefacts and weapons, a slave ring, a brothel where aliens were being forced to service human clients, and a gang selling alien blood as an aphrodisiac.
Bernie might be a trouble magnet, but he was helping clean up Cardiff’s streets.
