“Why don’t we have any chocolate?” Ryo said, his voice a bit indistinct as he rummaged so deeply in the cupboard where he and Dee keep their snacks that it almost looked like he was trying to climb in. He’d only arrived home a few minutes earlier, barely even taking the time to greet his partner, who’d had the day off, before heading for the kitchen and starting his search. Dee, of course, had followed, hoping for a bit more that the brief kiss hello he’d gotten.

Now he snapped back to reality, tearing his gaze away from the tantalising sight of his lover’s butt sticking out at an inviting angle and tried to pay attention to what Ryo was saying.

“What was that, babe? Can’t hear ya too well over all the rustlin’.”

“Chocolate! Where is it?” Ryo said, speaking louder, although his voice was still slightly muffled since his head and one shoulder were in the cupboard. At least it was clear enough this time for what he was saying to be intelligible. “I want chocolate, and I can’t find any!” There was a plaintive tone to the words that Dee seldom heard; Ryo wasn’t the kind of man to whine when things weren’t going his way, unlike Dee himself.

“Sorry, babe, I ate the last bar a couple days ago, figured whoever did the grocery run next time could pick up some more. I wrote it on the list,” he added helpfully. Ryo had drummed it into his partner after they moved in together that if something was running low, it should be added to the shopping list right away instead of leaving it to chance that whoever did the shopping might notice they needed it. So far it was working out pretty well, they hardly ever ran out of anything, but tonight it seemed they had.

Withdrawing from the cupboard, Ryo slumped onto the floor with a disappointed sigh, shoulders sagging. “Well that’s just great. After the day I’ve had, I really wanted chocolate. Just my luck we don’t have any.” Twisting around, he poked about in the cupboard one-handed to see what else was on offer, but nothing took his fancy. “Chips and cookies just aren’t the same. I would’ve settled for chocolate chip, but we don’t even have any of those. Is there any ice cream in the freezer?”

Dee hated to disappoint the man he loved, but… “Only vanilla. We ate all the rest.”

“Damn. Everything’s against me today.” Shutting the cupboard, Ryo got wearily to his feet. “Think I’ll go soak in the bath. Maybe that’ll help.”

As soon as his lover vanished into their bedroom, Dee grabbed his wallet and keys, shoved his feet into his boots, pulled his jacket on, and headed out. If Ryo wanted chocolate, Dee would just have to go get him some. After all, it was his fault they’d run out. Fortunately, there was an all-night grocery store just a few blocks away that was pretty well stocked with everything anyone might urgently need, even in the middle of the night.

When Ryo wandered out into the living room after his bath, he couldn’t believe his eyes; there on the table was every kind of chocolate imaginable, plus a tub of his favourite mint choc-chip ice-cream, chocolate chip cookies, and a chocolate cake. He stared at the unexpected bounty in confusion; the things he wanted didn’t usually materialise out of thin air.

“Dee? Where’d all this come from?”

“You wanted chocolate, and it’s my fault we didn’t have any, so I went to the store and got you some.”

“Some?” Ryo eyed the mountain of goodies. “It looks like you bought the whole store!”

“Nah, there was plenty left; I just got the best stuff. Help yourself to whatever ya want right now, and I’ll shove the rest in the cupboard. It it’ll fit.”

Walking over to his lover, Ryo kissed him, a way better kiss than Dee had gotten earlier. “Thank you. You didn’t have to do this, I would’ve survived without chocolate.”

“I know, but when you’re wantin’ somethin’, ya shouldn’t have to do without, ‘specially when you’ve had a rough day. I love you, so whatever ya need, and whenever ya need it, I’m always gonna do my best to make sure ya get it, and that’s a promise.”

“You’re too good to me.” Smiling, Ryo selected a couple of chocolate bars and curled up at the end of the sofa, unwrapping the first bar and biting into it with a contented sigh as Dee busied himself putting the other goodies away. Thanks to his wonderful, thoughtful lover, his bad day had just gotten a whole lot better; he’d have to show his appreciation later, but first he was going to enjoy his chocolate.
