Watching Bikky play basketball, all the way through college to the big leagues, gives Dee a kind of vicarious thrill; in a way, he envies the boy his success, although he’d never say so out loud. There’d been a time when Dee himself had harboured dreams of playing professionally, but the truth is, even before his shoulder injury, he’d never been good enough. He’s old and wise enough now to openly admit that.
Bikky has more talent in one hand than Dee has in his whole body, and that’s… okay. The kid was born, maybe even designed at a genetic level, to play basketball. Dee, despite being a respectable six feet two, is a little on the short side for a game where height is such an advantage, but Bikky could make six feet seven inches before he stops growing.
More than that, Bikky plays instinctively, like he doesn’t even need to think before making a play. He’s exciting to watch, so fast and sure, and he looks good on the court, with the striking contrast between his pale blond hair, lighter than ever now from the California sunshine, and his coffee-colored skin. He draws the eye irresistibly, so it’s no wonder he’s already such a fan favourite.
Dee and Ryo don’t get to Bikky’s games often, they have their jobs, and they can’t afford to fly all over the country. They’re not made of money, and they don’t get unlimited time off. But if the Clippers happen to be playing in the New York area, Bikky makes sure to reserve seats for his dad and Dee, as well as for his girlfriend.
And yes, even if Bikky is playing against Dee’s beloved Knicks, he still cheers the boy on, even while he wishes he could be out there himself.
The End
