Ryo tried to repress a shiver as he looked out of his bedroom window at a cityscape buried beneath several inches of snow. Bikky would no doubt be delighted; to kids, snow was a wonderful adventure, but to Ryo, and most other adults, it was a nightmare to be endured. The cold, the ice, the danger on the roads, the extra time added to the daily commute… It all added up to a miserable prospect.
Bikky burst into the room without knocking. “Ryo! It’s snowed!”
He turned to his foster son, smiling at the boy’s excitement. “I noticed.”
“D’you think school will be cancelled?”
“I don’t think it’s deep or cold enough for that, but you’d better put the radio on to find out for sure. If it IS a snow day, you’ll have to stay with Melinda next door and be careful not to track snow into her apartment.”
“But if it’s a snow day, doesn’t that mean you get to stay home too?”
“Oh, I wish that was true.” Ryo smiled ruefully. “Criminals don’t stop for bad weather though, and police have to be ready to help with emergencies, so I have to work.”
“That sucks.”
“I know.”
